Early 2000: US Builds Up Influence in Central Asia

By the start of this year, the US has already begun “to quietly build influence” in Central Asia. The US has established significant military-to-military relationships with Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. Americans have trained soldiers from those countries. The countries also participate in NATO’s Partnership for Peace program. [Washington Post, 8/27/2002]
